Steve Hooker 5.96 A New Olympic Record

Steve Hooker's 5.90 video to win the Gold

Some people are having trouble with this video not being available, so I will post it from another server

"BEIJING (AP) — Steve Hooker of Australia has won the gold medal in the men's pole vault, Australia's first in track and field at the Beijing Olympics." (The first field event Australia has won in 60 years I might add)

"Hooker cleared 5.90 (19-4 1/4) on his third attempt in Friday night's final, immediately after world indoors champion Yevgeniy Lukyanenko of Russia had failed at his last attempt on the same height and took silver at 5.85 (19-2 1/4).

Hooker cleared 5.96 (19-6 1/2) after clinching the gold medal, beating the Olympic record by 1 centimeter (a half inch).

Denys Yurchenko of Ukraine cleared 5.70 (18-8 1/4) and still was eligible at greater heights but withdrew with an injury and settled for bronze."

I might add that Hooker jumped at 5 heights tonight, 4 of those heights were 3rd attempt clearances. That's a lot of jumps.

Usain Bolt 200m Video

Usain Bolt wins the Mens 200m Final in Beijing with a World Record! "Bolt is the first man since American Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100m and 200m gold medals at an Olympics." This time he actually ran to the finish in this event. Enjoy the video!

Congrats on 5.05 Isinbayeva!

This morning Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva crushed the Women's Pole Vault with a new World Record of 5.05m (16'6 ¾'). There was thought to be some stiff competition between USA's Jennifer Stuczynski, but "Isi" beat everyone at only her second height! Stuczynski did get Silver with a jump at 4.80 (15'9). But I think Isi proved her point that she still is the queen of the Pole Vault with her new world record by jumping about a foot higher than anyone in the competition and more than 7 inches higher than anyone else. Ever.

Blog Tune-Up

I think it's time for my blog to get a tune up of new colors, and maybe a new title. And guess what? You have complete control over what I change on my blog. What I would like to have happen is you guys comment on what colors you would like to see most on my blog. Just 3 or 4 of them. And maybe even a suggestion for a new title! I think it's time for some changes, and I want your input!

Kasperi's Baptism

I just received an e-mail this morning from my old companion Elder Jarkko Lampila. In it was this picture of us and a young man named Kasperi Kontinen. Elder Lampila and I taught the lessons to this young man and his family and he decided that he wanted to be baptized. In April 2008, Kasperi's baptismal service was held, and Kasperi asked me to baptize him. It was such a wonderful blessing to see this young man enter the waters of baptism. I was so grateful and honored that he asked me to perform the baptism.

I sure miss Finland a lot...
