I am pretty excited for this semester. I am taking a Bio class, a Chem class, Book of Mormon, Student Development, and Finnish. I think I will do well in most of these classes. . . except the chemistry class. I am taking Chem 105 this year, and from what I hear, this class is really tough. So tough in fact, that this class is the reason that I believe the school newspaper has an obituary section. At any rate, I am ready to work hard and learn a lot.

So school? Bring it.

Ahh. My grandparents live in Ogden, and my parents and sister Jenn were waiting for us there. We all got together for some nice family time before the big surgery.
On Saturday we had a special treat. My grandparents have a friend down the road with a huge library of all sorts of books. He even has a first edition Book Of Mormon from 1830 that he let us hold and look through!

Ellie’s birthday was on Sunday. I was able to go to church with her and her family in Roy, and hang out with them for the day. It was a lot of fun! Her family sure is great, and they remind me a lot of my family.

A huge chunk of the family was in town this week, so on Sunday, we had a little BBQ and took some pictures with everyone that was there.

On Monday, we even took the pictures further and got some professional photos taken of the family. Here are some of the Grandkids with Grandma and Grandpa Gibbs.

Tuesday! He gave me a phone call and we talked for a bit. Turns out that the MRI showed my hip to be 100% normal. Perfectly fine. He went on about how healthy I looked, anatomically speaking. He could not see anything wrong.

Well, that's good news and all, but... why does my hip hurt? Why does my hip hurt even more than before the surgery?

The doctor told me to take the winter and just do a light work out to see how my hip would feel. Biking, swimming, very low impact exercises. Yup, that's it. My surgeon ordered another MRI for me today at my doctors appointment. I told him about how the pain in my hip is still there and quite a bit more painful than before surgery. He said, "Well, we know it's not in your hip." Not in my hip? Oh, okay (rolls eyes). I believe he meant that it wasn't in the anatomy of my hip but I guess it was kind of a nice way of saying "I have no idea what is wrong with you."

So... Ya. I will be getting another MRI this thursday and we will compare the new one, with the old MRI's from before surgery and see if we can come up with anything.

Back to square one.

Steve Hooker 5.96 A New Olympic Record

Steve Hooker's 5.90 video to win the Gold

Some people are having trouble with this video not being available, so I will post it from another server

"BEIJING (AP) — Steve Hooker of Australia has won the gold medal in the men's pole vault, Australia's first in track and field at the Beijing Olympics." There was thought to be some stiff competition between USA's Jennifer Stuczynski, but "Isi" beat everyone at only her second height! Stuczynski did get Silver with a jump at 4.80 (15'9). But I think Isi proved her point that she still is the queen of the Pole Vault with her new world record by jumping about a foot higher than anyone in the competition and more than 7 inches higher than anyone else. In April 2008, Kasperi's baptismal service was held, and Kasperi asked me to baptize him. It was such a wonderful blessing to see this young man enter the waters of baptism. I was so grateful and honored that he asked me to perform the baptism.

I sure miss Finland a lot...

The City

And the answer is...

Today was the long awaited post-surgery appointment with Dr. Lynch. My parents and I drove to the doctors anxiously waiting to hear what he had to say about my recovery. Well, we arrived and waited...and waited. The doctor finally arrived and we talked. I told him that I still had quite a bit of pain in my hip, in fact, sometimes it's worse than before the surgery. In his very official sounding doctor voice, he said something like..."There is nothing anatomically incorrect with your hip. It will just take time for it to feel better. Let's give it some more time, September. This is why we have workout programs, physical therapists, etc. Exactly for this reason, to get your hip better, to work it back into shape. So do some low intensity work outs and see me in September."

So what if the pain doesn't go away? Well, September is the answer.

My Fortune

The Big Day

I am sure a couple of you have been checking my blog for a while to see how my surgery went. I know I have been totally slacking, but here it is!

Wednesday June 11th, 10:00am. My parents and I arrived at the surgery center, checked in, and waited for my name to be called. While I was waiting, I read an awesome year old Sports Illustrated magazine. I finally heard my name called and went back with the nurse. She hooked me up with an awesome gown, slippers and some warm towels while she took my vitals and hooked up my IV. The doctor came to us and explained again that he was using this surgery as a way to look at the actual anatomy and figure out what was wrong. While he was in there, he was going to repair the tiny tear in my labrum. Later, the anesthesiologist came in and well...knocked me out! All I remember is saying "bye" to my parents as they wheeled me away.

The next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room having the hardest time trying to open my eyes. I wanted to know what was going on, and where I was, but at the same time I just wanted to rest. My parents came in, and the nurse brought me a PB and J sandwich and another warm towel. Man! the warm towels are probably the best part of the surgery! Anyway, The doctor came back and talked with us for a bit and explained what he saw. This is what we have been waiting for. The doctor explained to us that the only thing he saw wrong in my hip was the labrum tear. There was no trace of a Femoral Acetabular Impingement, No sign of Acetabulum Dysplasia, no (insert another big phrase that relates to bad hips). So he fixed the tear, smoothed it all out, and called it good. He said there shouldn't be any pain in my hip after my recovery. He said the surgery went well, and I should be back to 100% in about a month.

What a relief!! Can you believe that? What a miracle! Last January, I almost went in for a surgery on my hip that would require a 1-foot incision down my hip, a femur bone dislocation, 6 months on crutches and a chance at never getting back to 100% normality in my hip. I am so grateful we didn't do that.

Recovery has gone smooth. I was told to stay in bed for about 3 days for the first part of recovery. I was able to catch up on a few movies that I still hadn't seen. But, those 3 days went well because of my awesome family (especially my Mom) who helped me out with everything I needed when I couldn't move. THANK YOU SO MUCH! The next week I was on crutches, slowly increasing my movement each day to where I was able to hang out with my brother some and run some errands around town. And about a week ago, I dropped the crutches and started walking on my own. I have only fallen once! I think that's pretty awesome. But I'll tell you, I am so anxious to start running again. I feel like I have been in a locked cage for so long. To run again, to play, to keep up with my friends, oh man. A dream come true! I just hope it comes soon.

Well, that's it! That's my surgery story. Things are going well. I still cannot believe it was just a labrum tear. I start physical therapy tomorrow, and that will determine if the surgery has really worked or not.

And of course...pictures!

Totally Ready.

Oh Look! and IV!

Pulling it off.

Way out of it.

Surgery

June 11th 2008.

"Oh No..."

One of the phrases you don't really like hearing while you are at the dentist, or the barber, or especially in the hospital is "Oh No" This usually means something bad, or something hasn't gone "quite right" well, I heard that phrase at the hospital yesterday while I was getting some more injections done.

We arrived in the hospital and were taken to the waiting room. After about 15 min. The doctor's assistant came in and told us to come back to the work room. He explained to us the procedure, it was a pretty normal one. I was there to get my hip injected with dye to trace where the pain was coming from. Apparently this dye is attracted to pain (that is one trait I am glad I don't have). This way you can see exactly where the pain is coming from. Well, they got me on the table and started getting everything set up and the doctor looked at my x-rays and MRI's and said "Oh No..." (que depressing music)

I was a little worried of what he just said, so I asked what was going on. The doctor said he has never seen anything like this before and doesn't really know what to do. He called a few hip specialists all over and talked with them a bit. After the phone calls, he came back to me and said "You might have a famous hip!" I'm thinking more infamous, but yeah. He went ahead and injected the numbing medicine into my hip. For those of you who haven't had that done, it's the worst part. Kind of painful, I won't lie. Then injected about 6 or 8 different things, dyes, steroids, and something with big names that I can't remember. But thats what happened.

After the injections were done, I couldn't really walk because the pain was so bad and I was really dizzy (my parents said I was really loopy too, but I don't know if I believe them =)) We waited for the doctor to come and report to my parents. He told us that he was really concerned about my condition. He thinks that it is a lot worse than anyone has really said.

With that, he told us to hang out for a little bit to see how I would react to all the injections. So we got some lunch at the cafeteria. Oh, p.s. we arrived at the Hospital at 8:30am, just so you have a time frame about him looking at my images making phone calls. The actual procedure took about 30 min.

I am doing okay now. The pain is still quite intense, so I have been walking with a cane. Yeah... I know. I am 20 years old and using a cane, you can laugh, it's cool. I'll laugh with you. The doctor at the hospital wants to wait 1 full month before I see him again, although I do have an appointment with a hip specialist this monday. Sometimes it's just a bummer to have to wait so long between appointments.

Well, thats my story for you. I hope it wasn't boring, and I hope it made sense. I took some pictures while I was there. So enjoy!

After just arriving to the hospital.

Getting my awesome Hospital Bracelet

Getting the "Low-down"

The Death Table

Just In Case...

The Dad Person

Not me...

Hooray for wheel chairs!

Why Not?

Okay, So I totally love the show "Scrubs" and when we were in the cafeteria, I saw these interns on lunch. This means I will not be having a full on hip replacement. It was such good news to hear, although there was a part of me that was excited about me slowly turning into the Six Million Dollar Man, or Ironman.

Other news, This coming friday, I will be traveling to the Tri-Cities again for another injection. For this procedure, the doctor will inject some sort of dye into my hip bone, so they can trace the movements of my hip and see where the pain is coming from. Hopefully this injection will give them the information they need to move forward and come to a final conclusion. It has been kind of hard getting different diagnosis, doctors disagreeing with each other, waiting weeks at a time between appointments, and being in pain all the time. It's stressful, but, I don't think it is bringing me down.

Well, thats pretty much it for now. I just thought I would throw you guys an update.

Kiitos Kaikista. Jos sinä voit ymmärtää tämä, sinun pitäisi kirjoittaa takaisin. Se olisi mahatava! Haluan tietä teistä! Onko tämä oikein?

Thanks for everything! You guys are awesome.
